Stop anti-dumping duty on imported stainless steel
All India Stainless Steel Industries Association (AISSIA) today urged the government to immediately stop the imposition of anti-dumping duty on imports of stainless steel coils, as it is adversely affecting the domestic stainless steel utensils and cutlery manufacturing units in the country.
Association President Badri Baldawa said the imposition of anti-dumpng duty on the import of 1,250 mm and above will not only adversely affect the economy of these small scale manufacturing units which might affect these utensils manufacturing units to continue with these large workforce.
In a statement issued here, he pointed out that there are about 5,000 small scale manufacturing units providing direct emplotment to over three thousand workers and making exports of goods worth 20 millions USD.
Mr Baldawa alleged that the governemnt has initiated this step at the behest of Jindal Steel Ltd.
He said even this monopolistic manufacturer is not producing magnetic type of stainless steel sheets.
”Jindal Stainless Ltd has not been able to satisfy the demands of making satisfactory quality of AISI 304 grade of stainless steel sheets for the manufacture of pressure cookers, stainless steel sinks and watches. Their material fails to meet the deep drawing requirements, gauge consistency and surface finish requirements of sophisticated products. The industry has to depend on imports to meet the needs of international buyers safety and quality products,” the statement added.
The AISSIA has urged the government to call off its probe on anti-dumping on stainless steel products and not to impose any duty on high grade stainless steel which is currently not being manufactured in the county.
