Thailand to impose anti-dumping stainless tax

coils 150x150 Thailand to impose anti dumping stainless taxThailand’s government has decided to impose a 5-year anti-dumping tax on cold rolled stainless steel from Taiwan, Japan and Korea commencing at the middle of March this year.

The government explained that the domestic cold rolled stainless steel market had been seriously affected by steel from the abovementioned three countries, and that local mills were calling for stricter limitations of these steel imports.

Despite an imposition of a 50.99 percent tax on these steel imports two years ago, the amount of imported steel has increased continuously. Statistics show that Thailand imported 25,000 tons of stainless steel in 2007, mostly from Japan at 17,000 of tons, while Taiwan’s and Korea’s figures were for 2,000 tons and 1,700 tons, respectively.

For certain stainless steel which is not currently available in the domestic market, the government has given a 6 month grace period to the three countries.
